Sometimes the profile windows get really crowded with annotation details and can become confusing to read. This is especially true when there are drainage profiles on the left and right sides of the road that should be displayed in the roadway profile view. To minimize clutter, some designers would like to manually move certain vertical alignments (and their corresponding annotation) vertically up or down in the profile display to a portion of the grid that is empty.
