Many bridges have approach spans that are smaller in length to the main spans. For example, a bridge that crosses over a railroad ROW may have prestressed concrete in the approach spans and a continuous steel bridge over the railroad, then the end spans may also be prestressed concrete. Currently, OBM requires 3 bridges to be defined for this superstructure configuration instead of 1.

This is currently handled with the concept of bridge units. One bridge…and for example 3 units: concrete spans, steel spans and finishes with more concrete spans.
